A lovely article — I adore etymology. Have you read Sheard’s The Words We Use? It’s a nice primer on the history and evolution of many English words including “lord” and “lady.” And as I’m sure you already know, mermaid is derived from a phonologically similar but etymologically dissimilar root: Old English Mere (water) which in turn comes from the Latin Mare (sea). So mermaid = water maiden.
