A nice account of a lesser-known historical figure. It is wrong, however, to claim that Caesar as dictator was "unthinkable" for Romans. They'd already had quite a few dictators, starting with Gaius Marius (who reformed the Roman military) and Sulla, during whose rule the young Caesar had to flee for his life. Dictatorship was becoming a common pattern in the decaying politics of Rome even as they clung desperately to the outward shows. Reminds us of somewhere more recent, I think...
