A nice article, thanks for writing. Personally I find the US obsession with protein to be bizarre. Nearly everyone has far more protein in their diets than their sedentary lifestyles require; meanwhile the USA has become the first country in history in which people can be simultaneously overweight and under-nourished. Diseases such as scurvy and rickets are appearing in several of the “deep South” States and many other ailments resulting from deficiency in key micro-nutrients are now common. This is where attention ought to be focused, but doubtless the complexity deters people whereas “protein” is a simple one-word concept and the traditional US attitude of “more is better, way too much is better still” works well here.
