A very useful, bud sadly rarely developed, life skill is to realize that the things presented to us are designed to make money for those who present them, not to inform us in a reliable manner. If more people could grasp this fact, we'd have fewer sensationalist pieces convincing ordinary people about all manner of spurious nonsense. A healthy skepticism is an invaluable attribute in today's puff-filled world.
