A well-reasoned article but… one reason the tech giants struggle to hit anything close to their diversity targets is simply the fact that so far there are insufficient numbers of sufficiently skilled programmers who also happen to be in one way or another in the minority categorization. If you need 1,000 new programmers and only 8 are from minority groups then with the best intentions in the world you aren’t going to hit your target. Sure, you can do what companies have been doing for decades: hire minorities for HR roles, front-desk roles, gopher roles, but that’s hardly an improvement. Google and Facebook and all the others aren’t responsible for the abject failures of the US educational system, so it’s not entirely fair to blame them for the obvious consequences.
