All social primate groups need a “leader” onto which individuals can project their fantasies, and the UK royal family largely fulfills this role in a way that transient mindless pop celebrities cannot. It also helps that they have no power, so they can’t perpetually disappoint like US Presidents. That said, they are also entirely anachronistic and a perpetuation of a class system that has poisoned Britain for centuries. On balance it would be better if everyone walked away from the Windsors rather than merely a couple of the cast walking off set. Unfortunately as most of the world loves trivia, The Timeless Windsor Show looks set to run and run regardless of the story-arc of any particular set of characters.
