Almost makes you wonder why doctors were handing out antibiotics like candy for so many decades despite scientists warning them of the consequences. Viral infection? No problem! Here are some antibiotics. Sure, they don't work on viruses but... we all know magic pills are the answer to every problem and maybe they'll stop you getting an opportunistic bacterial infection along the way. Any empirical evidence for this attitude? None whatsoever! That's the great thing about having a stethoscope and a degree - people just believe what you tell them even if it's dangerous nonsense. Doctors caused this antibiotic-resistant problem just as they caused the Valium epidemic and today's opioid epidemic. We urgently need to train doctors more adequately and take away incentives for mis-prescribing medicines.
