An excellent article, Lara. Thanks for writing. It is an unfortunate reality that therapists benefit from keeping their clients stuck right where they are, because if they actually helped them move forward the clients would depart and that would mean lost revenue. That’s why I’ve always explained very carefully to any therapist I’ve used that (i) the first session is me evaluating their ability to provide real value, and (ii) any further sessions will be strictly limited in number and will be terminated instantly if I don’t feel I’m getting continuous value from each one. The good therapists (both of them, sigh….) appreciate the directness; the rest just quail and try to explain why therapy ought to be a lifelong endeavor.
