An excellent article, marred only by the naive assumption that a reclassification would change much in the real world. We humans are masterful in our ability to discriminate others, to dehumanize others, and to conjure up all manner of nonsensical reasons why we’re entitled to do so. Just think of the dull-eyed drooling howling mobs of Trump supporters, or those Europeans who think the answer to the refugee crisis is to leave them to drown in the Mediterranean. Reclassification could be a good first step on a long, long road but it would in and of itself have little or no practical impact on quotidian behaviors.

One might also feel a little sorry for the chimps — imagine the shame of being lumped in with the same species that contains creatures like Trump, Bolsonaro, Duterte, et al….
