An excellent summary, Hannah. The BBC has never managed to grasp what makes a show successful, and consequently it's inevitable that sooner or later the BBC will hire the wrong people who will then make a mess of everything. Another example of BBC blindness came when the original three presenters of Top Gear had to be replaced: the BBC actually thought it was a car show whereas everyone else knew it was Jerome K Jerome's book Three Men In A Boat, or perhaps Last of the Summer Wine, with a few cars dotted around in the background. Russell T Davis understood Doctor Who; sadly none of the show runners subsequent to him has had a clue.
