Excitable journalists pumping out sensationalist reportage generally create a misleading picture of any armed conflict. They do so unintentionally, driven by the need to simplify and impeded by their almost total ignorance of all matters of relevance (even down to such easily-corrected mistakes as persistently reporting AK-74 rifles as AK-47s). Thus what the public sees on the front page or on the news broadcast is at best a very imperfect representation of a much broader picture and at worst totally misleading.

In order to understand the Ukraine conflict, it is necessary to understand how wars are fought.

Wars are fought across multiple dimensions. First of all, there are the official military forces. Usually these include an army, an air force, and maritime elements ranging from small patrol vessels up to entire carrier groups. Each of these elements has specific capabilities, and coordinating their capabilities is often a crucial factor in determining the success of operations.

In addition to formal military forces, there are often irregular forces comprising highly motivated civilians, some of whom may have had prior military training. Such irregular forces include ordinary people suddenly called upon to bear arms…
