As best as I can tell, problems arise when people forget that there are no perfect answers. When we press for the “rights” of one group there are inevitably costs that will fall on others. Thus a civilized society attempts to balance rights with costs so as not to unduly disadvantage any, which means of course no one gets everything they want. But when a huge number of people are disadvantaged in order to satisfy the non-essential demands of a very small number of others, we’ve taken a wrong turning. I preferred to address this issue through humor, but of course it deserves a more thorough analysis elsewhere.
