As Goebbels noted long ago, "A lie repeated one hundred times becomes the truth." In our Internet age, in which sensationalist nonsense spreads at the speed of light, it is no longer necessary to repeat 100 times. Once or twice is all that is needed.

Trump's success is based on populism, and populism in turn is based on appealing to low-IQ and very ignorant voters. As these are in the majority everywhere, we see that over the last several years populism has become the dominant political force in a great many countries around the world.

In the USA this is aided by the fact the Republican Party has been explicitly targeting the low-IQ and uneducated since the Nixon campaign of 1968 where, for the first time, the then-new marketing technique of segmentation was used to great effect. After Nixon, Reagan's campaigns likewise used segmentation to identify blocs of "values voters" who could be won over by an empty soundbite and a suitably telegenic smile. In consequence, most Republican voters today are low-IQ and extremely ignorant (the exceptions are the venal and the corrupt). This makes it very easy for a candidate to win huge numbers of votes by the simple expedient of telling simple-minded lies to simple-minded people. Providing these lies are soundbite-sized and easily chantable, victory is nearly guaranteed.

Trump lost narrowly (thanks to the ludicrous Electoral College system, Biden's real margin of victory was fewer than 50,000 votes despite his overwhelming popular vote superiority) only because he was so totally repellent that a majority of voters would have cast their ballots for anyone and anything opposing him. Next time round, however, those 74 million Republican voters will reliably turn out to cast their votes for their infantile orange god, while the opposition will be so disappointed by the Biden years that enough will stay at home to hand the victory - a real one, this time - back to Trump. And then he'll claim to be a three-term president while completing his demolition of the USA through total incompetence and ineradicable stupidity.
