As I wrote many months ago at the beginning of the stupid mass hysteria engendered by utterly irresponsible media sensationalism, if we'd spent billions on focused efforts to protect those most at risk instead of shutting down the world and spending trillions of bailouts that were the result of our grotesque stupidity, we'd have saved lives and prevented a second Great Depression. But instead, driven by the mass media, everyone panicked and politicians (as they always do) flailed around for something to do to avoid losing too many votes and thus did all the wrong things, as is so often the case. So we got the worst of all worlds: a stupid self-harming lockdown/shutdown, and no focused protection for the people who were most at risk. And now we're all running around terrified of rising rates of infection while failing to notice that rates of mortality have already fallen to nearly zero percent everywhere.
