As most people are profoundly ignorant of even the most basic physics and cosmology, and get the entirety of their ideas from TV shows like Star Trek, it’s irrelevant what they think. Unfortunately, such delusions appear to have great power, which means that we will not cease to hear of “alien abductions” (gotta love a good deep probing, right?) and charlatans like Elon Musk will continue to promote the pipe dream of creating his billionaire’s panic room on the red planet.

Now, if only we could spend a fraction of the money used to create TV entertainments on robotic missions to the other planets, on the next generation of space telescopes, and on further upgrades to CERN, we’d have the opportunity to learn more about reality, which is far more fascinating and wondrous than any sci-fi production will ever be.
