As religionism is nothing more than a failure of intellect, one cannot expect religious people to think or act coherently. By definition, people who believe in infantile nonsense have no grasp of reality; consequently they will always be easy prey for the unscrupulous who have always, and will always, take advantage of their empty-headed credulity. We can feel sorry for them, and we can lament the consequences of their idiocy, but we cannot expect them to do better - especially when their follies are constantly validated and encouraged by purported authority figures.
