As there's no actual science in sci-fi, what we always get (aside from 2001, A Space Odyssey) is just Cowboys In Space, updated to replace native Americans with more politically acceptable bad guys. Sci-fi only ever tells us about today and yesterday, and as such provides an (often unintentionally) amusing mirror for today's concerns.
