As you correctly point out, the abortion problem in the USA exists largely because religionists refuse to permit adequate access to contraception and refuse to permit adequate sex education. This is because the religiosity prevalent in the USA creates simple-minded indefensible positions that cause enormous social and individual harm. It's always amusing to note that supposedly "pro-life" activists are invariably also pro gun, which is the most anti-life position imaginable. In a sane and humane world, abortion would rarely be necessary (it will always be occasionally necessary due to health issues). But the USA is not a sane and humane nation, and hence polarization remains the norm. The entire abortion issue would vanish were it not for the indefensible positions adopted by right-wing religionist organizations and pressure groups.
