Basically the entire US agricultural system is industrialized to the point where nearly every output is harmful and nearly every living thing involved is subjected to appalling conditions. But most US consumers don't care because they're too busy cramming slop down their throats, making themselves chronically ill, and gawping at canned entertainments on flickering screens. It's as if the entire nation has been constructed simply to ensure large corporations can make good profits regardless of the systemic harms they perpetuate. Or, to put it another way, the USA is a triumph of pay-to-play democracy in which those with money buy the legislation they require in order to make more money, while ordinary people run around telling themselves they live in "the greatest country on Earth."
