Brexit was undoubtedly one of the greatest acts of national self-harm in history, delivered thanks to an inane combination of mindless soundbites, sensation-dependent mass media, spineless politicians, and clueless voters. But, as the author points out, Brexit was always a minority sport, confined only to the most ignorant, stupid, and racist - e.g. the bottom dregs of society. The real problem for Britain was not the original vote but the repeated opportunities to reverse it by kicking out the Tory Party; these opportunities were squandered because of the typical British characteristic of dithering indecision and complacent acceptance.

Britain is a nation of dreary hopelessness: the weather, the entertainment options, the food, the aspirations. This is the real curse, and the reason why anyone who can get out and live somewhere better has either done so or is working on their escape plan. The UK has been here before, with the late 1960s-early 1970s Brain Drain, which crippled the UK for a generation as talent & go-getting went elsewhere, leaving only the standard British "mustn't complain/more than my job's worth" complacency.

Now that the UK is a backwater, this trend will deepen. My son graduated with an MS in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering and everyone in his 40+ class looked for jobs outside the UK because it's obvious there's no future here for anyone with a functioning IQ. Writ large, this is a second Brain Drain. But you can't be sorry for the Brits because they voted for it and continued to vote for it, so they deserve every squalid dreary little thing that comes as a result.
