Brexiteers did not claim there would be a brief period of economic stagnation prior to trillions of pounds magically falling out of the sky. Brexiteers claimed (lied) that everything was "oven-ready" and there would be no downsides.

Ordinary people - ignorant, foolish - were given two utterly meaningless soundbites ("take back control!" and "restore our sovereignty!") and in return they voted to flush the UK down the toilet. This is because ordinary people are astoundingly stupid and want simple-minded soundbites they can happily chant. Reality is as far beyond their intellectual grasp as is the notion of integral calculus for a garden snail. It was always obvious to people with more than zero functioning neurons in their prefrontal cortex that Brexit would be a total disaster. Sadly, such people are fewer in number than the legion of morons who eagerly voted for infantile lies peddled by cynical charlatans.

Today it is obvious to all but the most abjectly mindless that Brexit was inevitably a total catastrophe. But the EU does not want the UK back, and rightly so. All that is left, therefore, is continual decline and irrelevance - which goes to show how wonderful representative democracy truly is.
