Columbus' voyages were paid for by Ferdinand & Isabella precisely because they expected riches. The belief was that there was a route to the East (where all the expensive spices came from) and so if it could be found, fortunes could be made. Nobody went off for the sake of exploration alone. It was always about financial gain and no one disputes this. Likewise the voyage of Magellan and every other Western voyage in recorded history.
