Curiously, many of the people who are first in line to be hurt by blustering demagogues are those who queue up enthusiastically to vote for them. It’s a bizarre phenomenon but we see it repeated throughout history and very much in our own time as well. Personally I think it’s absolutely hilarious that journalists still pretend that populism is “a cry against the elites” while ordinary people are tripping over themselves to vote (in the USA) for a self-proclaimed billionaire and (in the UK) for Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, Old Etonian and former President of the Oxford Union.
Perhaps journalists should get out more often….
