At some point in some people’s lives, a question pops into mind: how did I get here?

Usually, the answer is “I took the Number Eleven Bus” or “I unwisely decided to study Art History in college.” But sometimes, a few people go beyond the obvious and begin to ponder the larger question of how humanity came into existence.

At this point, nearly everyone avoids recruiting the neurons of the prefrontal cortex in order to attempt some thinking. Instead, most people simply accept whatever mythology happens to be prevalent among the group they are part of. “Daddy god made it” is generally enough for most people, so no additional intellectual effort is required.

Over the last couple of centuries, however, scientific empiricism has led more inquisitive intelligent people toward less inane responses. As we’ve learned more about the world in which we briefly live, we’ve discovered the mechanics of cellular biology and we know now that evolution is what gave rise to the millions of different species of living creatures on Earth. Our own existence seems a matter of chance alone, which is why we’re the only technology-capable species to have arisen in some four billion…
