Why the Tech Bros’ current romance with Donald Trump will end very badly for them
There’s a lot of excitable babble among journalists and commentators these days about the Tech Bros coming to Washington DC and how they’ll supposedly have a significant influence on the second Trump administration. Shares in Elon Musk’s various companies have all soared as perpetually coked-up and gullible investors have automatically assumed that the President’s Best Buddy (for now….) will be able to sway government policy in favor of those companies. This is, investors imagine, crony capitalism at its finest and they all want a piece of the imagined action.
In fact, it’s far more likely that the Tech Bros will leave Washington within the first twenty-four months with their tails between their collective legs, muttering about how stupid Republican politicians are. The fact this is hardly news, and that any Tech Bro with even a modicum of real intelligence would have taken the trouble to assess the fundamentals of Republican Party strategy for vote-garnering, will of course elude them. There’s an inescapable tendency in the USA to equate money with intelligence, and never more so than among those who largely by luck and through having been born into already-wealthy families find themselves in the ultra-rich bracket.
