Excellent summary article. It is probably also worth noting that human consciousness is at best partial. We have the illusion of consistency just as we have the illusion of a full field of view despite the fact there are actually two large circular areas of blindness caused by the retinal nerves leaving the eyeball at the rear. Just as our brain “fills in” these holes so we’re unaware of them, so the brain “fills in” the many deficits in our consciousness to create an illusion of consistency. In fact, our consciousness is very partial and very flawed. Unfortunately some (especially computer scientists attempting to “replicate” consciousness) seem unaware of this important fact.
