For a rather more comprehensive way of analyzing the work of other writers, David Lodge's book Modes of Modern Writing, while very old now, still contains valuable gems that can help any writer become far more of a craftsperson and far more able to use language to convey precisely what they intend, rather than (as is too often the case) merely throwing words at the page in the hope that somehow the reader will get some sense of what the author wants to convey.
