For me the saddest thing about conspiracy theories is their ceaseless banality. There's never been a conspiracy theory that wasn't simple-minded - which is why such fantasies are so appealing to the less intelligent among us. As the human brain is not evolved to perform consistency-checking, even the most glaring problems with conspiracy theories are overlooked by their adherents. It would be amusing were it not so terribly sad.
