Given how the US automobile companies actually profited from remaining active in Nazi Germany throughout WWII (their factories often being used to produce German weapons and munitions) it's likely many corporations thought they could play the same game today in Putin's Russia. But as you say, it's not going to work out for them and their shareholders ought to have been more prescient and dumped stocks early.
