In the USA Trump has proved this proposition many times over, as have Brexiteers in the UK, Modi in India, Bolsonaro in Brazil, Duterte in the Philippines, Orban in Hungary, Babis in the Czech Republic, Salvini in Italy, Le Pen in France, the AfD in Germany, Erdogan in Hungary, Putin in Russia….

And it is why liars usually win in democracies, as Plato pointed out 2,500 years ago, and why therefore representative democracy is such a truly awful way to attempt governance.
