Good article. A useful heuristic for modern living is “never believe anything you read in the mass media regarding science.” The media relies on sensation, and good science is rarely sensational. So the media either reports bad science (“black holes made by the LHC will cause the end of the universe!”) or misreports ordinary science (“Professor X cures cancer using tea leaves!”). Either way, we’re better off ignoring the mass media when it comes to the hard work of discovery.
