Starting at a new school, your first day at a new job, and the first time you go to a gym can all be emotionally challenging experiences. You’re new, you don’t know “how things are done around here” and you’re eager not to stand out like the proverbial sore thumb. Your first experience of a gym is particularly difficult because there will be so many pieces of equipment you’ve never seen before and so many types of exercise you didn’t even know existed. Plus, you’ll likely be self-concious of the fact the heaviest thing you’ve ever tried to lift was a triple-bypass McSlop burger or a bucket of Kentucky Fried Cancer.

But don’t despair. All you need to know in order to look like you’ve been going to gyms your whole life is contained within this easy-to-follow guide.

The first thing to realize is that it really doesn’t matter what you wear in the gym. Sure, some people buy expensive designer sportswear, but other people will be content with old loose clothes that have definitely seen better days.
