I confess that while I'm not surprised by the account of yet more male assholery, which is sadly too typical of Silicon Valley over the last 20+ years, I'm astonished that an experienced senior executive would be surprised to discover that (a) corporate statements about culture are always merely idle puff, and (b) that HR could in any way be anything other than a major part of the problem. It is incomprehensible to me that anyone could operate inside a US corporation for any period of time without perceiving these two basic facts of life. In my 30+ year career I've never once seen any corporate culture statement be anything other than a sop to the CEO's ego, and I've never seen HR do anything of the remotest use to anyone.
