I don't think this article is supposed to be humorous, or a satire on simple-minded perspectives, but it ends up being precisely that. By taking prior generations (feminism didn't really take off until the late 1960s and still has a long way to go) and by taking entirely non-representative samples (of one each, which is statistically spurious), the author pretends that Western values come up short when compared to those of tribal mythologies and restrictive social customs. In reality, for anyone born after 1960, the West offers incomparable freedoms and safety compared to benighted third-world nations suffering under religious dictatorships. Women in the West aren't forced to wear absurd clothes (corsets went out a century ago, and no one is forcing women to buy stupid shoes, though they do in vast numbers...). Moreover, the USA is not a very good example of Western culture. Anyone living in Europe pities those in the USA for the lack of health care, the horrific gun violence, and the absurd levels of religionist superstition.

A true comparison would have taken thousands of women in benighted backwaters like Pakistan and compared their situations to thousands living in places like Sweden and Germany. But of course, that comparison would have revealed Pakistan in all its awful squalor, hatred, bigotry, and backwardness.
