I find it very peculiar that some people completely miss the point as a result of tech fanboy enthusiasms that are actually irrelevant to the topic they imagine they are addressing. We humans will exterminate ourselves because most people have limited capacity to act coherently, while a few clever people continue to invent weapons that magnify our stupidity. It is, therefore, irrelevant whether or not we would become "a space faring race" (hint: never, ever, ever, due to some very basic facts) because even if magic occurred and someone invented a Hogwarts drive complete with Star Trek artificial gravity and anti-radiation shields, the crew would just squabble and fight and eventually war would break out and everyone would die.
Our problems are inside us, and no amount of silly Hollywood-influenced fantasy thinking has any influence on this fundamental fact.
