I genuinely can't tell if this essay was written by a bot assembling more or less at random phrases and sentences gleaned from a lengthy ML training exercise, or by someone for whom pretentious but vacuous babble actually has some vague appeal. I knew Terry Eagleton at Oxford and I can say with absolute assurance that the reason why "Marxist intellectuals" abandoned the notion of actual struggle against the supposed evils of capitalism was because they discovered how very pleasant it was to sit idly in academic jobs (paid for by the profits of capitalism) and spout utter nonsense while doing their best to seduce every reasonably attractive female student who came into range. In short, they were without exception fatuous charlatans whose con game enabled them to live lives of leisure.
