I keep hoping that the coming horrors will finally wake a few clever people from today’s utter complacency regarding our mode of governance. It’s astonishing that we require no understanding of anything at all in any aspect of political life. It’s as if we’d let anyone design bridges and power transmission systems and transportation machines and then let anyone at all attempt to control them, because “that’s democratic” and actually knowing something about a subject before being permitted to have input is Very Wrong Indeed. So let’s cheer for neurosurgeons who’ve never actually learned anything about the brain, nor ever performed an operation, but know they’ll be “naturally great and stable” at it. Because that’s going to produce the same great outcomes as Trump and Brexit, not to mention Orban and Bolsonaro and Duterte and Babis and…..
