I radically disagree with the premise of this article. In my experience, having known a great many homophobes, the reason such people are so stridently opposed to homosexuality is because they are terrified of their own suppressed sexual instincts. The more ardent the gay-basher, the more certain you can be that they're a closet queen. This is why so many US Republican politicians are so stridently anti-gay: they're secretly turned on by men (Oh, all those lovely football players! Oh, all that lycra!). A few years ago I was at a conference of Republicans and religionists and it was painfully clear that a huge number were denying their own sexuality with great desperation. It's this internal struggle that turns people into vile monsters, and sadly the squalid little myths that have arisen from Abrahamic mythology have made everything so much worse by encouraging such unpleasant psychological postures.
