I remember being shocked during my first trip to the USA at age 20 when I discovered that far from the nation being at the forefront of modernity, it was really trapped in the 1870s but with better toys. Sadly, very little has changed since then, and a lot of supposed "progressives" merely use performative wokism to reinforce the old neurotic puritanical norms that previously were the purview of the religious (far...) right. This is doubtless because the USA has been peopled largely by those from the lowest echelons of society where highly restrictive moeurs are common and so the original puritan toxicity has been continually reinforced in the intervening centuries. Hollywood, of course, plays its part by titillating audiences and then providing a denouement that ensures Calvanistic "moral values" triumph, albeit en passant rather than overtly.
