I suspect the issue is rather more complex. As a group species, homo sapiens is in perpetual competition with other group members and in near-constant antagonism with "not us" groups. In this regard we're far closer to baboon troops than to rational creatures and we have nearly zero control over our evolutionary hardwiring. Civilization is the means whereby we attempt to rein in our unhelpful default behaviors, but our modern world consistently undermines civilization in the pursuit of transient profits. Until we recognize that a society aspiring to humane values cannot afford a profit-above-all-else mentality, we will continue to be prey to those who exploit our natural weaknesses for their own temporary advantage.
