I went onto Facebook back in 2007 for professional reasons and then failed to check back in for two years. When I returned I discovered some friends I’d lost touch with (due to us all being in very different parts of the world) had found me on FB. So then I began to check in a few times a month. Since then I’ve met a few interesting people through FB but now that Zuckerberg has decided that it’s OK for right-wing orgs to post intentional lies I’m going to archive myself on that platform. And you’re right: a lot of people seem to think that electronic graffiti is all about selfies of them doing interesting things (or rather, the same things over and over and over). I have the impression sometimes that it’s all a bit desperate, redolent of Stevie Smith. They’re “not waving but drowning.”

As for LinkedIn, it’s an essential component of modern dating in the USA! How else will your prospective partner check out your probable net worth??
