I would say there are two heuristics for good mental health. One: don't permit yourself more than 10 minutes of so-called "news" per day, including all social media. Two: ignore all "science news" completely. If you want to learn about studies, read the original papers, not some know-nothing journalist's sensation-oriented misinterpretation. Oh, and Three: don't be surprised to discover most science is unreliable. We're still not teaching researchers how to design experiments properly, and we're still not teaching researchers anything like adequate statistics. So if you really want to know what a study is saying, you'll need access to the original data set. And sadly, many researchers still fail to make that available.
