If anyone could point to a single instance where sanctions have brought an armed conflict to an end, I'd have slightly more patience with Western attitudes. Sanctions are, in fact, merely a way for timorous politicians to appear to be "doing something" while in reality doing nothing of value. When Ukraine needed weapons (including fighter jets) we responded with.... toothless sanctions that are easily evaded and had plenty of carve-outs to appease authoritarian regimes like that in Hungary. Ordinary Russians have no influence on what Putin and his cronies do, so making it fractionally more expensive for them to buy Levi jeans isn't exactly a war-stopping action. Important things like machine parts and computer chips are still flowing freely into Russia via intermediaries and the cost is irrelevant because Putin has put Russia on a war footing. We need to stop pretending to ourselves that economics has much relevance when it comes to stopping the slaughter in Ukraine. It's a meaningless distraction that enables us to evade the real issue, which is: why are we always providing far too little, far too late?
