I’m about to publish an article here on Medium that demonstrates why religion and morality are actually antithetical, and inevitably so. It takes a very dull and limited sort of mind to imagine that abdicating personal responsibility for one’s actions in favor of obeying “orders from a superior” could constitute any sort of morality. Certainly the judges at the Nuremberg Trials were unequivocal on this point. And you’re right: the idea that we’re all rapists and thieves and murderers if we don’t follow the precepts of some infantile mythology is a very bleak view of humanity, and in fact totally erroneous. Our primate cousins don’t need childish stories of gods and goblins to get along perfectly well, and nor do we. As the lead character in the Ricky Gervaise series After Life pointed out, “I don’t believe in your god and yes, I do as much raping and killing as I want. Which is none at all. Because I don’t want to.”
