I'm not sure that the conclusion is merited. String theory in its current form is obviously "wrong" in the sense that it can produce nearly any outcome depending on the way one tweaks the variables and does cancellations. But if ST fails, that doesn't mean a more concise and more predictive theory based on entirely different assumptions won't eventually emerge.
