I'm not sure that we can simply claim "it's society" when it comes to preferences regarding hair or smooth skin. Back in the days of the Crusades, the Ottoman habit of depilation was widely adopted by Christian knights, who took it home with them after they'd finished pillaging and killing. No "society" was telling them they should have this preference.
Conversely, however, the preference for male beards and moustaches does seem strongly socially conditioned. Backward nations often confuse hair with wisdom, which is why NATO special forces units operating in Afghanistan always grew beards - it was a prerequisite for being taken seriously by those they were working among.
As for pubic hair, I've known several lesbians and bisexuals and every single one has expressed a strong preference for shaved or depilated genitalia, because even well-groomed pubic hair does tend to be (i) irritating to skin, and (ii) get stuck between teeth.
What is clear is that risible and very transient notions of "political correctness" are worthless and irrelevant, and never more so than in the case of pubic hair.
