I’m puzzled by the apparent assumption that being fat is merely a question of attractiveness or “body image.” Given that more than half of all medical spending (nearly a trillion dollars in the USA alone) is now a result of obesity-related diseases, and given that three million people a year die of obesity-related diseases, it seems strange to ignore the enormous negative health implications of being overweight. To pretend that such horrific consequences are to be ignored, and that facile Politically Correct notions of “body acceptance” should dominate our discourse, seems utterly bizarre.
