In my experience, a single paragraph is generally enough to indicate whether or not a work of fiction is worth reading. Which is why, for the most part, I've read so little over the last 30 years. Reality is so much more interesting, and so few writers have anything remotely approaching craft by means of which to compensate (a la P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Wilde, et al) for fundamental lack of substance.
