It seems many people, when confronted with ambiguity, seek to resolve their discomfort by embracing the least-plausible hypothesis imaginable and then clinging to it with desperation ever afterward. Formerly people were convinced they'd seen angels or demons; today they're convinced they've seen alien spaceships. As the church has been replaced by the entertainment industry as the vehicle by means of which most people get their ideas, this is hardly surprising. Reasonable people, however, conclude that more data is required in order to arrive at any meaningful hypothesis, never mind a firm conclusion.
