It seems to be an inevitable fact of human nature that whatever technologies we create we always end up using them precisely as you’d expect a relatively dim-witted group of social primates to do. Facebook is merely electronic graffiti and gossip, F22 Raptors are merely fire-hardened pointed sticks. We continue to default to simple-minded beliefs and revile those who don’t share them. We continue to fear and hate other groups (however defined). We continue to avoid thinking as much as possible, because this saves calories that used to be scarce. Unfortunately none of our social systems from Facebook to the way we self-govern have been designed with any comprehension of our fundamental limitations. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in today, and why it will get much, much worse in the years to come.
